There are some beauty products it is worth paying a bit more for. It’s like that saying – you should always spend more money on your bed and your shoes as you’re always in them (promiscuity and large shoe collections aside of course). When it comes to your face, most of us will find that foundation is something we use on a daily basis and as such we really believe in spending that little bit more. After all, if your base isn’t up to scratch, then what you put on top of it is a bit irrelevant!
We find that buying from premium brand counters makes our lives so much easier. The assistants know so much more about the products and can talk you through what will suit your skin type, and they’ll normally colour match you so that you can ensure you’re leaving with exactly the right shade for you. You really don’t get that kind of service in a drugstore and most people often leave Boots or Superdrug with the wrong product or the wrong shade. How many times have bought a foundation from the high street, got home, used it a few times and then left it to languish in a drawer or thrown it in the bin because it really doesn’t look or feel that good in the cold light of day? If you add up all those bottles and containers, you’d probably find you’ll save a lot more purchasing a premium brand.
At the moment we are in love with Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua. The 30ml bottle is nice and compact so fits nicely into your makeup bag and although plastic isn’t quite as glamorous as some, it is practical as you don’t have to worry about it smashing when you inevitably drop it on the floor or in the sink!
You have to shake the bottle well before every application as it does tend to separate a little but that’s perfectly normal due to its fluid consistency. When you put a little on the back of your hand, you can instantly feel how light it is. We always apply our foundation with a brush and this one blends really well. Cheesy as it sounds you really don’t feel like you’ve got foundation on, although if you like heavier coverage you can build it up. Even a light application covers redness well and we’ve found that it lasts all day with a dewy but not shiny finish.
If you want an even dewier finish, you should try the original Chanel Vitalumiere which is even lighter. However, if you’re prone to a bit of shine and aren’t quite up to embracing it, we’d recommend the Vitalumiere Aqua. It has an SPF 15 and protects from UVB rays too, which will help keep aging at bay. It also has a really pleasant but subtle fragrance.
Priced at £32, we can’t praise this foundation enough. If you need a new base, or even if you don’t but want to treat yourself, we suggests going to your local Chanel counter and asking to try it. We guarantee that as soon as the assistant puts it on your face it will sell itself!
What do you think of Vitalumiere Aqua? How much would normally spend on a foundation? Let us know as we’d love to hear.
