#CelebWatch

January 7, 2013 — Leave a comment

Moved on from Monica…

How utterly gorgeous did Courtney Cox look on the Jay Leno show at the weekend? We’re not going to lie, we going to hazard a little guess that she’s had a teeny bit of work done, or maybe not such a teeny bit. That said, she is 48! If we look anywhere near this good at nearly 50 then we’ll be very happy! We love the vampy look to match her black leather outfit, and like how she hasn’t gone too heavy on the makeup. We’re going to try and copy this look on our next night out.

What do you think, has Courtney had “too much” work done? Or do you think she looks as great as we do?

Does Kim need to brighten up a bit?

So surprise, surprise, the twitter trolls have been out in force to condemn Kim Kardashian for being in a nightclub on New Years Eve. Shock horror, pregnant woman doesn’t stay in with hot chocolate on NYE! We’re not even going to comment on her dress of choice, but we really, really, really wish Kim would do something other than the nude lip now. We love a nude lip sometimes, but we’re a bit over it for now.

Do you think Kim could be a bit bolder or are you loving her NYE makeup?

Must watch or must not…?

It’s that time again. Some of us will be glued to our TV for the next few weeks, some of us will pretend we can’t stand it but watch in secret, and some of us will give Channel 5 a very wide berth. Whatever your thoughts on CBB, we love watching it just to see what outfits the girls choose to wear in. That and peeking at their makeup bag contents and what they look like sans slap, means we’ll probably be dipping in and out!

Will you be watching? Whose makeup bag would you like to snoop in?

Hermione Who?

Wowzers, Emma Watson looks stunning on the cover of February’s Marie Claire mag! She’s been trying to move away from her character as the best known female wizard, and we’d say she’s definitely done that! Emma is one of our style icons, constantly updating her look; but always going with what works for her.

What do you think of Emma’s latest cover?

Here at thebeautyobsession we don’t agree with picking on anyone and pointing out flaws, celebrities included. However, sometimes there are just some faux pas that we just can’t let pass by without comment! We see them everyday whilst out and about, but rather than get arrested for photographing strangers in the street, we thought we’d use the rich and famous to demonstrate our Top 5 Make Up No No’s!

Tango No No! –  First up it’s the lovely Kim Kardashian. Whilst we may not be a fan of KK’s, she does often look stunning. However, in this pic she’s committing the same sin that millions of other women fall foul to every day – wearing the wrong shade of foundation for your face! It doesn’t make you look like you’ve got a healthy glow if it’s too dark – it makes you look radioactive. And too pale isn’t good either, unless you want to look like you’re wearing a mask of course.

Fix It: Make sure you always match your foundation to your face, not your hand! They’re usually a completely different shade. Instead, put a stripe on your jaw line or neck to see which is the closest match. If you can, always take a friend with you and step outside or close to a window to check how it looks in the daylight. Your neck is usually slightly paler than your face, but by matching to this you can avoid the dreaded “tide mark” effect. You can then warm your face up with a little bronzer and blusher for a more natural look.

Reverse Panda! – We love the beautiful Eva Longoria, but she’s fallen foul of another common mistake. Although Touche Eclat is amazing, if you use to much, you will regret it. Especially when you’re caught in the camera flash!

Fix It: Apply a small stripe about 1cm long in the inner corner of your eyes, then three more small stripes evenly under the under eye area and then blend in with your ring finger. This should give you enough coverage without overloading your face. We’re very unlikely to get papped whilst out and about, but if you are going somewhere where there’s likely to be photographs, we do recommend taking a quick snap of yourself to check you haven’t committed any sins that the camera is going to exaggerate. You might feel a bit daft, but it’ll save embarrassment the morning after, especially if you realise your undies show through your dress when the flash goes off!

Beastly Brows! – Well there’s no denying that sometime Katie Price goes a bit OTT with most of the makeup she wears, but each to their own. One pet hate we do have is the “trend” for the Scouse Brow as modeled here by KP. They look false and incredibly harsh, which is fine if that’s the look you’re aiming for, if not steer clear!

Fix It: Find a brow pencil or powder that closely matches your natural brow colour, and don’t go more than 1/2 shades darker. Great brows really frame your face, so we’re all for grooming, just remember to apply with a light hand! If you’re using a pencil, ensure you don’t create lines that are too hard. Likewise if you’re using a powder, apply with a specially angled brow brush and you still need to blend, blend, blend!

Shocking Shiners! – We love a smokey eye, but there’s nothing worse than looking like you’re sporting two black eyes, as showcased by Taylor Momsen here. Not only does it look Halloween scary, it makes your eyes look so much smaller.

Fix It: Build up your colours lightly, and don’t use a really dark shade as your base colour, save that for the crease of your lid or detailing a “V” into the outer corner of your eye. Always use good brushes to apply shadow, and blend away any hard lines to create a softer effect.

Aunt Sally! – Amber Rose is a gorgeous lady, but she seems to be trying to live up to her name a bit too much in this pic. Blusher is supposed to give you a natural flush, not make you look like a clown!

Fix It: Again, don’t be heavy handed. Use a good blusher brush that doesn’t pick up too much product, and always tap of any excess. Smile and apply lightly to the apples of your cheeks and then blend upwards across your cheekbone. It should have faded completely before you get to your hairline, you don’t want to be wearing go faster stripes!

So now there’s no excuse for making these makeup mistakes. Although let’s be honest, we’re all guilty of the odd faux pas, just experiment and learn what works for you and what doesn’t. Luckily for most of us, our mishaps won’t be front page news!

Conquer Contouring!

November 18, 2012 — Leave a comment

Professional makeup artists and those with die-hard cosmetic addictions have long known about using contouring to shape the face, but 2012 can definitely go down in history as the year the word got out and contouring went mainstream! Not so long ago you would’ve had some very confused faces looking at palettes they had no idea how to use, but not any longer. Now celebs like Kim Kardashian are posting pic of themselves mid-makeover, and beauty blogs and tutorials are becoming ever more popular, this is a trend that we predict will be followed by the masses.

So, what exactly is contouring and why do so make makeup artists swear by it? The idea is that you can highlight areas of your face that you want to make more prominent, and fade out those that you don’t. No longer are chiseled cheekbones the stuff of dreams or only achieved on a starvation diet, when done correctly contouring can sculpt your face perfectly. When applied badly, you do run the risk of being mistaken for a clown, so beware this trick does take a little practice!

Look around most beauty counters now and you’ll see that they have their own versions of countouring products. Before you make a purchase, there are a couple of things you need to think about. Firstly, make sure you buy a flat bronzer, one with gold or shimmery tones is not right for contouring. Secondly check you’ve got the colour right. Although you need your contouring colour to be dark enough to make an impact, you don’t want to go too dark and like you’ve run amok with some shoe polish. And finally, which ever product you chose, check how well it blends. As with most makeup tricks, the key to contouring is to blend, blend, blend!

Some of the products you might light to take a look at are:

Mac Pro Sculpting Creams – As the name suggests, these contouring colours come in cream form. You can select from five shades, three contour colours and two for highlighting. £17.50 each.

Sleek Face Contour Kit – A powder kit designed specifically contouring, with a flat bronzer and shimmering highlighter. There are three shades to choose from; light, medium and dark. £6.49.

Smashbox Step by Step Contouring Kit – A three-piece kit containing two very blendable contour colours as well as a highlighter & brush. £35.

Now you’ve got the right kit, you’ll want to go ahead and use it. The first thing to do is decide which areas of your face you wish to accentuate, and which you want to tone down. By contouring, you can make your face slimmer and more defined, as well as detract attention from your less than favourite features. If you already have razor-sharp cheekbones for example, you probably don’t need to worry about contouring them, but you might want to focus on slimming your nose. If you have a perfect looking nose already, then you might want to sharpen your jaw line. It’s all about making the trick work for you.

Essentially, all you need to remember is that you use the darker colour to shade and “hide” areas, and the highlighter to, funnily enough, highlight! Follow the guide below for a starting point:

The key things to note here, is the contouring used around the nose, cheeks and jaw.

  • By highlighting the middle and using the darker shade in two lines either side, you’ll create the effect off slimming the nose.
  • When trying to give the illusion of supermodel cheekbones, use the dark shade to draw a stripe across the hollow just under your cheekbones. You can then apply the highlighter on the actual cheekbones to accentuate them even further. We also like to add in a bit of blush just on the apples of the cheek, and then blend it lightly up the cheekbones in between the contouring shades.
  • If you have a rounder jaw line that you’d like, applying the darker shade along the jawbone will help sharpen it up and give your face a more sculpted look. Likewise, if you have a strong jaw and want to soften it up, apply highlighter along the jawbone and you’ll be surprised at the difference.

Always apply your contouring creams/powder after your foundation and concealer and we know we’ve said it already but BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! You don’t want to be looking like these two:

Remember, there’s no excuse for bad makeup!
