No one can have failed to notice that magnetic nail varnishes are everywhere at the moment. It seems there are still quite a lot of people who are yet to try them though. Possibly because we’ve had quite a lot of nail trends lately and they can look a bit tacky (crackle glaze anyone?). We decided to try a couple out and see if this is just another fad or one that will keep you stylish throughout the Autumn/Winter.
We tried two different brands at opposite ends of the price spectrum so you can see which stood out from the crowd. Here’s what we thought….
Brand: BarryM
Shade: 346 Sparkle Red
Price: £4.99
This is a varnish is a gorgeous silver colour with dark red pigments. The magnet gives a really vivid striped effect which is very distinctive. Two coats is enough to get the most out of the colour and it finishes to an almost foil shine which becomes even more pronounced with a top coat. Polish lasted 3-4 days without chipping.
Brand: Nails Inc
Shade: Kensington Palace
Price: £13
We love this dark red shade for this time of year. The fact that the magnet brings out a darker colour gives it a classy, sophisticated effect. As with most Nails Inc varnishes this one applies very well, covering the nail on the first coat, although we did find you have to apply quite a heavy second coat for the magnet to be able to work. However, both coats dried relatively quickly. The pattern is a marbled, almost spotty effect which we loved. This polish lasted 4/5 days with a top coat before chipping, a top coat is definitely required as it has a more matt finish on its own.
Our Verdict
We loved both of these polishes and really think the magnetic trend is a style we’ll keep calling upon for the foreseeable future. We think the BarryM polish is great for a night out or to bring a bit of bling to your day, whilst the Nails Inc is a great long lasting polish for wearing everyday, especially if you want a more “mature” version of the trend. Despite the £9 price difference between the two brands, we would definitely purchase more magnetic polishes from both brands.
Top Tips
With all magnetic polishes, always shake well before each application to ensure the metal particles are well dispersed. Apply one coat to all nails and let them dry. Then apply a thicker second coat and hold the magnet above the nail for 2 – 3 seconds, being careful not to smudge the nail by touching it. Do this one nail at a time to ensure you don’t allow the varnish to dry or the magnetic effect won’t appear.
Most brands use different magnets which create different effects. To get a different look, use the magnets from other brands to get different patterns with your favourite colours.
